There was no shortage of color (and phone checking) on display at the 10th anniversary of Oakland Pride.
Over the years, I've seen some big names, like Chaka Khan and Sheila E, but it has mostly been less renowned entertainers that I've had to ask "who the f--- are they?". The latin stage has been pretty reliable though. You're sure to see lots of booty shaking and a good helping of mariachi.
Rainbow crossings are popping up everywhere these days. Aside from the warm afterglow of the event itself, that lingers in the air, it's nice to know that there will be something that remains long after the beverage tents and mechanical bulls have disappeared.
The main change to Pride festivals that I've noticed is more commercial involvement, especially in San Fran. Fortunately, Oakland's has maintained more of a gritty edge, which is reflected in the talent on display, both on the stages and the crowds themselves. Aside from the abundance of beverages that can be consumed while walking down the middle of the street, the biggest attraction at these events are the people. There's always so much variety and a buoyant spirit that goes beyond the intoxicating effects of the alcohol.
