One of the things I like about living in Cali is that pretty much any time of the year there is something blooming. Even though it’s early February, the blossoms have started to appear. The bees are starting to buzz.
I’ve been dabbling in Polaroids recently and have been getting mixed results. For the most part I’ve been disappointed. As many of you may know, Polaroid no longer makes film for their cameras (at least not for their older ones). Others have had to take up the slack. The Impossible Project is the main taker. While they have been making a valiant effort to replicate the film produced by Polaroid, they are not quite there yet. Some like the muted tones and off colors. I’m not a big fan. I’ve also tried some expired original Polaroid film. It’s pretty much a crap shoot. Below you can see three attempts. The first and last were taken using Polaroid 600 film that expired in 10/09 with a 690 camera. Not exactly fresh. As you can see, the colors are not very vibrant. But the photos are pretty sharp. Using such old film, you also run the risk of not getting anything developed because the chemicals have dried out. This is what happened with the third attempt I made with this pack. The middle image was from Impossible film. Actually not that bad. Part of the challenge with this film is that it is really sensitive to light just after they are ejected from the camera. And it takes about 30 min for them to fully develop (in the dark). Very finicky. Still it turned out to be the best of the bunch. Maybe I’ll give that film another try. The Impossible Project is apparently continuing to work on improving their film and version 2.0 should be coming out soon. I’ll post some pics once I get my hands on some.
After all that vibrant color, I felt it was time for some green. The plants on my balcony were very well behaved subjects. Not a single complaint during the entire photo shoot.
